Time for work gloves!

We are pleased to announce that we will be holding our second annual Falls Neighborhood Clean-Up Day on Saturday, November 2, from 9am to 1pm! Last year’s clean-up day was a major success. With the support of the South Hadley Department of Public Works, we picked up litter from the sidewalks and gutters, weed-whacked the overgrowth behind the parking lot on Main Street across from Egg & I, raked up debris from School Lane, and cleaned up various other locations.

To make our efforts successful once again, we need your help! We will be focusing on many of the same areas this year as last year, with some new additions including the area around High Street. Please sign up for as much time as you are able to commit–one hour, two hours, or even all four hours. DPW will provide rakes, weed whackers, and other equipment; please consider also bringing your own tools. Also, we strongly recommend work gloves… and maybe your camera too.

We have an easy online sign-up form this year. You may use this form to register as an individual, a group, or an organization. Email or call us with any questions!

Tag sale time is coming!

by fallsneighbors on October 5, 2013

It’s been an exciting summer–our apologies for not having updated this website since FallsFest! We hope everyone had a great time there.

As anyone who’s passed through South Hadley during Columbus Day weekend knows, our town goes all out with tag sales during those three days. We had a wonderful tag sale last year, raising about $475 to fund our activities and events. This year we’re hoping for an even better sale! We have been invited to set up shop in front of Town Hall. Our tag sale will take place on October 13-14, from 9-3 each day. 4 Brothers Deli will be selling gourmet food to fuel everyone for a big day of bargain hunting.

As we did last year, we are soliciting your vintage treasures and random items to sell. Donations will be accepted in person only at the following times: Thursday, 10/10, from 4-6pm and Saturday, 10/12, from 10-12 and 2-4. We will be accepting and storing donations in “PODS” behind Town Hall. We are very grateful to Hampshire Towing for providing the PODS! Any items remaining after the sale will be donated to local charities.

Interested in volunteering to staff the tag sale? Please email or call us to sign up for a shift. We particularly need people to staff the sale on Columbus Day itself (10/14).

Summertime

by fallsneighbors on June 22, 2013

Happy summer, everyone! The water is now on at Beachgrounds Park every day from 10am to 8pm, a sure sign of the change of seasons. Time to break out the bathing suits, grills, sunscreen–and, coincidentally, a new look for our website.

Here’s a quick rundown of some of the things that are in store for us this summer:

The South Hadley Farmers Market is in full swing at the Town Common, every Thursday from 1-6pm. In addition to local food and crafts, they’ve got music and information about local groups. Also on Thursdays at the Gazebo: the Recreation Department’s free summer concert series, which begins June 28 at 6:30pm.

The Massachusetts Walking Tour comes to town on Wednesday, June 26. This quartet of folk musicians travels on foot along the New England National Scenic Trail, performing at venues along the way where they are often joined by local musicians. Two South Hadley classical duos will be making guest appearances: the viola duo of Scott Slapin and Tanya Solomon and the violin-piano duo of Gillian Woldorf and Heather W. Reichgott. We are proud to sponsor their concert at the South Hadley Public Library and are grateful to the South Hadley Cultural Council for a Local Cultural Council grant supporting this performance.

FallsFest 2013 will fill Beachgrounds Park with music, food, art, and fun activities on Sunday, July 27, from noon to 10pm. If you thought last year’s block party was awesome, hold onto your hats for FallsFest! The lineup of musicians is, in a word, amazing. You can dine on food from South Hadley restaurants and learn about the various nonprofits in our town. Proceeds will benefit the USO of the Pioneer Valley and Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food Pantry. FallsFest 2013 is co-sponsored by the Falls Neighborhood Association, the South Hadley-Granby Chamber of Commerce, and the South Hadley Recreation Department, with financial support from a Local Cultural Council grant from the the South Hadley Cultural Council, and from a fine list of businesses and individuals.

Town fireworks will be at Michael E. Smith Middle School on July 3 (raindate July 5). Activities begin at 6pm, fireworks at 9pm.

More information about summer activities throughout South Hadley can be found at the Recreation Department’s website!

Happy Earth Week!

by fallsneighbors on April 20, 2013

Earth Day is April 22, but Earth Week is already in full swing. Here is a letter to the editor that we sent to the Town Reminder (you can see it in the April 19 issue!):

Spring has finally come to South Hadley! The last of the snow has melted away and the winds are starting to die down.

This year’s weather patterns have left behind not only the usual branches and other plant debris, but also quite a bit of litter. Litter of all shapes and sizes is still being blown around town, especially in the Falls. It’s easy just to look the other way and hope “someone else” will pick up the trash on the sidewalk.

The Falls Neighborhood Association encourages everyone to be that “someone else” this Earth Week. We challenge each South Hadley resident to fill just one small bag with litter and then dispose of it properly. (Of course, recycle those bottles and cans!) When everyone pitches in to pitch litter, we all reap the benefits immediately. This town belongs to all of us. Let us as a community come together and take care of it.

Sincerely,
Gillian Woldorf and Adam Roberts
Co-organizers, South Hadley Falls Neighborhood Association

So, there is your challenge! For extra points, wear your Falls Neighborhood Association tee shirt while you’re doing your part for our environment.

A community garden for the Falls?

by fallsneighbors on March 3, 2013

We had a full agenda for yesterday’s monthly meeting! Larry Dubois of GRO South Hadley shared information about a proposal to convert the lot between Carew Street and School Street into a community garden. This piece of land is currently owned by E-Ink; it hasn’t yet been decided whether the town would lease the land for a nominal amount or purchase it outright. Regardless, it will be at least another year before this space could be prepared for planting.

We’re very excited about the possibility of a community garden in our neighborhood.  The current community garden on route 47 is a neat place, but it’s quite a drive from the Falls, where we have higher population density and less backyard space than in other parts of town. In addition to obvious benefits like better access to fresh, local produce, community gardens bring people together–learning from each other and having fun together under the sun.

Interested in a plot in this year’s community garden? You can get application information here on GRO South Hadley’s website.

Know Your Town forum

by fallsneighbors on February 24, 2013

Know Your Town is hosting a panel presentation and discussion entitled “What’s Happening in South Hadley Falls?” this Thursday evening, 2/28/13, at 7pm in the South Hadley High School library. There will be brief presentations by seven different groups, including ours, about the changes and prospects in store for our neighborhood. Adam & Gillian will be there to speak about our group’s activities, goals, and accomplishments. Following the presentations, there will be a question-and-answer session and social time (with snacks!).

For more info, check out the event page on the Town website.

We hope to see you there! If you’re unable to attend, we hear that the program will be recorded for later broadcast on Channel 15. Details to follow.
